HARRISBURG – Rep. Keith Greiner (R-Lancaster) announced state grants of more than $470,000 have been awarded to Akron Borough and the Earl Township Sewer Authority under the Local Share Account (LSA) program.

Each year, the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA), an independent agency of the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), which holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments on behalf of the Commonwealth, distributes the state’s share of gaming revenue to local governments and programs.

Akron Borough was awarded $245,879 for renovations to its municipal garage, which has not been substantially improved since it was built in 1911. Renovations include replacing the heating system, gutters and downspouts, doors and lighting, installing a wash bay and safety rinse station, floor drains, and insulating the attic. Exterior improvements such as security lights and cameras, exhaust fans, painting, façade repairs and repaving are also planned.

Earl Township Sewer Authority was awarded $225,000 to complete upgrades to nine of its sanitary sewer pumping stations and bring the township into compliance with Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) monitoring requirements. They include pumping stations at Winding Oaks, Custer Avenue, Peters Road Industrial Lots, New Holland Elementary, Maple Grove, New Holland North, New Holland South, Garden Field, and New Design Industrial Park. Upgrades are site specific but may include new flow metering, installation of remote monitoring systems, construction of metering manholes, bypass pumping, and restoration of disturbed pavement.

“I advocated for these grants, which will cover a significant portion of the total project costs,” said Greiner. “We all rely on working sanitary sewer systems and well-equipped public safety infrastructure to keep us and our communities safe and healthy. I am pleased the grants were approved.”
